Yerevan, Armenia, March 01, 2008
The police and military forces of Armenia today at 6:30am started the forced brake of a peaceful 11-day demonstration of the opposition in the Opera Square in Yerevan. People were beaten by electrical shock devices and clubs. As the oppositional leader former president of RA Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s press office reported by 17:05, 16 persons were arrested (some of arrested are already released), 6 people are missing, and 39 persons were taken to hospital. The list of missing and wounded is growing. The oppositional leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan is under home arrest. In the morning, people started to gather on the streets of Yerevan to protest the governmental actions, but the police did not allow them to gather together. However, moved by police from various sides, the crowd could assemble in the Square next to the French Embassy, and by 7pm the number of people reached about 100000.
The Radio Liberty report of 7pm says that freedom of movement of people is violated: roads to Yerevan are closed for men - microbuses take only women for transportation to Yerevan. A demonstration in support to Yerevan protesters is organized in Gyumri, second city of Armenia.
