Yerevan Not For All Yet

135 000 people with special needs live in Armenia at present. Half of them live
in Yerevan. $2 million AMD program entitled “Yerevan- city for all” is being
implemented for them, chairman of the association of the parents of children
with special needs “Astghik” Levon Nersisyan said on October 18.

Government Violates Ombudsman's Rights

On October 14 the RA Ombudsman Larissa Alaverdyan had a new reason to complain
of the RA Government. The budget fails to allot the stipulated sum to the
Ombudsman's administration for the second year already.
Larissa Alaverdyan announces that the Government did not want to support the
Ombudsman's office.

The National Citizens’ Initiative (NCI) continued its series of public hearings
with a town-hall meeting on “Violations in Property Alienation.” By means of the
event, NCI brought a new stimulus to the civic movement against the human rights
infringements taking place during implementation of the new construction plan
for Yerevan.

Young Woman Threatens to Set Fire to Court Officers

On October 13 resident of Buzand Street Hovik Hovhannisyan was summoned to the
central police station.
The policemen and court officers surrounded Hovhanissyan’s house and threatened
to pull it down. The sister of the accused in her turn, demanded to return her
brother and threatened to pour petrol upon the court officers.

Human Rights Lawyer Arrested After Challenging Government

A human rights lawyer who has helped Yerevan residents facing eviction from
their homes to sue the Armenian government has been arrested on fraud charges
which he believes were fabricated in response to his activities.
Vahe Grigoryan's lawyers appeared with a statement.

Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly organises public hearing on
gender equality in the South Caucasus

Parliamentarians from Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia will join with women’s
groups in the three countries, as well as experts from the UN, to discuss gender
equality in the South Caucasus at a public hearing in Tbilisi (Georgia) on
Friday 14 October 2005.
