Armenian New Speaker to Be Elected May 31

Armenian National Assembly will convene a special session on May 31 to elect
a new Speaker. A respective decision was signed by Parliamentary Vice-Speaker
Tigran Torosyan in compliance with item 2 of article 19 of the National Assembly
Regulations, reports the Press Service of the Armenian NA. Chairs of Standing
Commissions on Defense, Security and Internal Affairs, as well as Social Issues,
Health and Environment will also be elected at the Armenian National Assembly
special session.

Armenian Parliament Speaker Confirmed Resignation

Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly Artur Baghdassaryan has confirmed his
resignation today. He stated it at a press conference in the parliament at that
refusing to reply to reporters’ questions. Artur Baghdassaryan thanked media for
joint work and added that the further activities of Orinats Yerkir party will be
announced later...

Banned TV Again Denied Broadcasting License

The Armenian authorities reaffirmed on Thursday their determination to maintain
their effective four-year ban on a leading independent television company,
thwarting its fresh legal attempt to resume broadcasts.
The National Commission on Television and Radio, a regulatory body appointed by
President Robert Kocharian, rejected the A1+ station’s application for one of
two radio frequencies put on a tender. The commission voted unanimously to give
both frequencies to two little-known companies...

The International Institution Is Astonished By the RA FM

On May 25 the annual review of the company “Human Rights Watch” was the key
issue of discussions in Armenia which mainly relates to the Armenian problems.
Judging by the answer to the RA Foreign Ministry to the company “Human Rights
Watch” Armenia doesn’t “counter any problems especially in connection with
speech and press freedom. The letter of the Foreign Ministry says that the
company made a mistake speaking about the national Commission on Television and
Radio (NCTR) and broadcast tendencies...
