Armenia has deposited the OPCAT ratification

On September 14, 2006 during the UN Treaty Event Mr. Gagik Yeganian, Acting Head
of the Migration Agency of the Ministry of Territorial Administration of the
Republic of Armenia deposited ratification of the Optional Protocol to UN
Convention against Torture. Thus Armenia became the 23 country which has joined
to this document. According to the Protocol Armenia is obliged to establish
national preventive mechanisms within one year.

Ombudsman Sees A Menace For Freedom Of Expression

The level of human protection is far from being perfect in Armenia. RA Ombudsman
Armen Haroutyunyan sees a real threat in this respect. His anxiety is determined
by the recent violence and intimidation on journalists.

As freedom of expression is one of the necessary guarantees for democracy
establishment, the continuation of such atmosphere can be a threat for our
country’s future...

Monitoring Boards’ workshop

On September 14th a workshop of Monitoring Boards of the Ministry of Justice and
Police of Armenia was held.

Representatives of the OSCE office in Yerevan and Ombudsman’s office were in
attendance of the workshop. Participants discussed the perspectives of
Implementation of the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture in
Armenia, current and future national preventive mechanisms. As a result of the
meeting, a list of suggestions was developed for improvement of the Boards’
activities and an agreement was reach about further joint events and
discussions.
