Decision 2007 Comes May 12: Will it be fair?

A decree signed this week by President Robert Kocharyan places the Parliamentary
elections on May 12.
Now that the date has been settled, the over-riding question remains whether
these elections – unlike any in independent Armenia – can be fairly executed...

Editor Denied Release: “Guilty” verdict voids chance for administrative
penalty

Lawyers for jailed newspaper editor Arman Babajanyan have failed in their
argument before a court of appeals that their client is being punished beyond
reason.
Babajanyan, 30, editor of Zhamanak-Yerevan (“Times-Yerevan”), has been in jail
since last June on charges of avoiding military service by falsifying documents.
The editor returned to Armenia after living in California, and started the
opposition newspaper that quickly gained a reputation for criticizing the
government...

Youths Protest Anti-Armenian Violence In Russia

About a hundred student activists staged on Wednesday a rare demonstration
outside the Russian embassy in Yerevan to protest continuing racially motivated
attacks on Armenians in Russia.
Chanting “No to Russian fascism,” the protesters, most of them members of the
student wing of a small Armenian party, demanded that Russian authorities crack
down on neo-Nazi skinheads widely blamed for endemic violence against
darker-skinned people living in Russia...
