The Prominent Rights Defender Was Killed

Today in Novolushkinski park of Moscow human rights defenders will have a protest in the memory of Natalia Estemirova, activist of "Memorial" rights defender centre of Chechnya. The prominent human rights activist was kidnapped on Wednesday early morning in Grozni city, and after the noon Natalya Estemirova's body was found 100 meters far from the "Caucasus" road of Nazran region of Ingushetia. She had bullet wounds to the head and chest. Two witnesses told that they saw how Estemirova was forcefully taken by "Jiguli" car and heard how she asked for help.

In Russia Oleg Orlov, head of the "Memorial" human rights organization talked about the killing of the subsequent human rights defender, and blamed directly the President of Chechnya Republic for this crime.

"His name is Ramzan Kadirov. He is the President of Chechnya Republic. Ramzan has already threatened and offended Natalya, considering her his own enemy. We don't know whether he gave the order of killing himself or it was done by his supporters in order to satisfy their chief. And probably President Medvedyev wants to have this murderer, who works as a head of one of the subjects of Russian Federation".

Human Rights Watch has called on Russian authorities to investigate immediately the abduction and killing of Estemirova, to bring all of those involved to justice, and to put a halt to the atmosphere of fear and unpunished violence in the region.

"Natalia fought for justice all her life and the best way to honor her would be to find her killers and put them on trial," said Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch. "We're devastated by her death. But ensuring her murder does not go unpunished would help to break the vicious cycle of abuse and impunity in Chechnya."
