European Court again obliged Armenia to pay compensation

European Court of Human Rights already for the third time obliged Republic of Armenia to pay compensation to the residents of Buzand Street whose houses were destroyed during 2000-2006 and inadequate compensation was suggested.

According to ECHR decision, RA government is to pay compensation of 18 thousand 500 Euros to the Hovhannisyans family for violating their right to property after evicting them from their house in 2005.

As the president of NGO "Victims of State Needs" Sedrak Baghdasaryan said to www.hra.am, this family received compensation of some 10.500 USD, with which they didn't manage to buy an apartment and until today they rent a house.

"Of course, they can't have an apartment, which they could have those years, when the houses were destroyed, but at least they will have their own roof", says Baghdasaryan.

He also mentioned that there are 20 more cases against Armenia in the ECHR connected with violation of property rights, and decisions will be made on them, since the deadlines have passed. Another 10 cases will be reviewed later.

The sum, which the Armenian government must pay within three months, is barely enough to buy a small apartment in the outskirts of Yerevan.

No new building has been constructed yet at the site of the demolished houses of the Hovannisians and their neighbors. According to the family lawyer, Vahe Grigorian, the construction company that bought their land has gone bankrupt and is now facing criminal proceedings.
