More Than Half Will Not Participate In the Elections

The elections of the local governing bodies started yesterday. Before the
official data about the results of the elections and the percent of
participation of the electors we will represent the results of our internet
poll.

Asked the question «Will you participate in the upcoming elections of local
governing bodies» 55.8% of the readers said they would not. 34.2% said they
would. 6.1% said they would if there were not busy on the election day. And 3.9%
were undecided.

More Yerevan Homeowners Face Eviction

Over a thousand families living in a wooded neighborhood on the northern
outskirts of Yerevan are facing eviction from their homes which the municipal
and law-enforcement authorities say were built illegally in Soviet times.

Eviction Has Stopped

The houses in the Buzand street are like ruins after the earthquake. There are
only several houses standing. Up to now the residents of the street expected the
court officers every moment. On September 12, however, it turned out, that the
officers have received an order to postpone the eviction, as the owner of the
area «Viscon» CJSC has submitted an application to postpone it.

Ombudsman Worried About The Referendum

The RA Ombudsman Larissa Alaverdyan is going to have meetings with the NA
Standing Committees, fractions and their heads. On her offer they will discuss
the legislative reforms and the process of Constitutional reforms.

The Ombudsman is also worried by the fact that up to now it is not know what
state structure will be responsible for public awareness campaign organizing.


Taking into account the fact that time is pressing before the referendum,
according to Larissa Alaverdyan, we must start a huge campaign in order to raise
public awareness about the content of the coming Constitutional reforms.
Otherwise, the insufficient activeness of the RA citizens can affect the results
of the referendum negatively.

Council to Protect: Human rights groups collaborate in defense of
imprisoned soldiers

A collection of human rights protection agencies, including representatives of
the Helsinki Committee of Armenia, have formed a council for the defense of
Razmik Sargsyan, Araik Zalyan and Musa Serobyan, soldiers sentenced to 15 years
each for the murder of two other soldiers last year in Karabakh.

Armenian Voter Lists ‘Still Deeply Flawed’’

Armenia’s largest election-monitoring group warned on Thursday that the upcoming
local elections and constitutional referendum can not be free and fair without a
thorough revision of the notoriously inaccurate lists of the country’s eligible
voters.

The organization called the Choice is Yours concluded after a month-long
monitoring in Yerevan and other parts of the country that the voter registers
remain deeply flawed despite the Armenian authorities’ pledges to correct them.
