Cassation Appeals in Khalafyan’s Case
In the case of the 24-year-old Vahan Khalafyan, who died at the Charentsavan Police Department in 2010, cassation appeals were presented by Artak Zeynalyan, legal successor of the victim, the Prosecutors Office and Seda Safaryan, attorney of the main accused Ashot Harutyunyan.
Artak Zeynalyan told www.hra.am that the appeal was accepted by the court, however, it is not clear yet if it was accepted for proceeding or not.
It has to be mentioned, that on June 15 the Criminal Court of Appeal (presiding Judge Aida Hovanisyan) dismissed all appeals in Vahan Khalafyan's case. Simultaneously, the court applied the resolution on amnesty reducing by one third the sentence not served by the main accused Ashot Harutyunyan, former head of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Charentsavan Police Department, and freeing investigator Mores Hayrapetyan from punishment.
Artak Zeynalyan, representative of the legal successor of Khalafyan, had earlier told www.hra.am that he did not agree with the resolution of the Court of Appeal. He says that the amnesty resolutions applied to the policemen because they were sentenced not for torture but for abuse of office or misuse of authority.
Vahan Khalafyan's family demands to punish Ashot Harutyunyan not for causing Khalafyan to commit suicide but for using violence against him, replace Mores Hayrapetyan's punishment - suspended imprisonment, with imprisonment, and convict investigators Garik Davtyan and Gagik Ghazaryan.
