Zaruhi Postanjyan’s Claim Sustained by Court

On March 26 Judge Gayane Karakhanyan of the Kentron and Nork-Marash communities' court of general jurisdiction sustained the National Assembly "Heritage" faction Deputy Zaruhi Postanjyan's claim against "Azatamtutyun" newspaper (Part 1 of Article 136 of Criminal Code - insult).

The court reversed police investigator's decision of December 21, 2009 to drop the case and remitted the case for further inquiry.

According to the decision of investigator Ashot Mkhitaryan from the Kentron Department of Investigation, reporters had simply assessed Z. Postanjyan's professional activity and did not intend to insult her.

"Heritage" leader Raffi Hovannisian considers Postanjyan's victory natural.

"The label of a prostitute, a naked body for political professional activity cannot say anything about the RA citizen, human rights and the prestige of RA as a state. Those who developed and published those ghastly formulations are a thousand times more indecent than professional prostitutes. This is not only Postanjyan's claim. This is a struggle for the ordinary citizen of RA, to make him safe, to protect his honor and dignity, to provide him with conditions to do his professional work without such unworthy, inhuman and anti-Armenian phenomena."

Hovannisian expressed hope that the law enforcement system that had somewhat tried to cover up the action by dropping the case would find in itself the arbitering source and hold responsible the authors of the publication.

Prosecutor Sergey Abrahamyan refused to comment the verdict before its final part is published.
