Obstacles to Movement (video)

For transferring a letter to the city mayor a group of people gathered in the Republic Square and went to the Yerevan City Hall. They needed one hour for reaching the city hall, while this distance can be overcome in 10 minutes. The thing was that people with physical disabilities were also participating in the march, but they met obstacles on their way to the city hall.
With the initiation of NGOs working in the field of protection of rights of people with physical disabilities and with the support of RA Human Rights Defender today a letter was transferred to the city mayor. Once again they raised the issue of lack of available transportation and building inaccessibility for the disabled people.
Taking into consideration that the right to the movement is ensured by RA legislative acts as well as UN Convention on Rights of People with Physical Disabilities, HRD employees, NGO representatives and other public figures handed in a letter to the Yerevan city mayor Karen Karapetyan demanding to take steps for making the city accessible for everyone.
People who have physical disabilities could not hand in the letter since the new building has a skewed platform which is quite dangerous in its usage.
The protesters were accepted by the head of the Department of Transportation of the municipality Henrik Navasardyan who informed that the mayor is busy and cannot accept them.
H. Navasardyan promised that buses with wide doors will be imported from China soon, which will be accommodated for people with physical disabilities.
