Armenians in Georgia Appealing to CE
On October 25-26 CE Monitoring Commission will hold the sitting in Tbilisi. Georgia’s commitments will be discussed. Board of Armenian Social Organizations of Samtckhe-Javakhq has addressed the following memorandum to the Commission drawing its attention to the grave situation in Samtckhe-Javakhq.
”Because of discriminating laws in Samtckhe-Javakhq region the Armenian population has been poorly represented in the local administrative system. There aren’t elected bodies at district level and there isn’t a legislative basis for the institute of empowered representatives appointed by presidential decrees.
Neither short-term programs nor prospective ones or those of social and economic development proceeding from the real interests of the population are implemented. Poverty and despair of people reach menacing volumes. Conditions of educational and cultural life support are insufficient.
Many Armenian cultural and religious monuments and historical scripts prove that the Armenians in Southern Georgia, including Samtckhe-Javakhq are aboriginals whereas the Georgian society views the Armenians residing in those territories as newcomers. There are facts registered about the attempts of making those monuments Georgian”, the statement says.
Authors have appealed Monitoring Commission “to guarantee that Georgia will honor the commitments assumed during membership to Council of Europe”.
