Early Conditional Release System is not predictable for Prisoners

The early conditional release (ECR) system in Armenia lacks clear criteria and does not work effectively. In 2013 only five per cent of inmates eligible for ECR were released. Decisions of the Independent Board on not approving ECR are not grounded and are not subject to appeal. The stakeholders do not deny that the system needs to be reformed.

CSI organized a training course on the activities of the International Criminal Court

On July 22-23, 2014 “Civil Society Institute” NGO organized a two-day training course in Yerevan about the International Criminal Court (ICC). Representatives of Armenian NGOs and media, lawyers and young activists participated in the training.

Civil Society Institute assists to capacity building and development of South Caucasus NGOs

Civil Society Institute, Armenia organized a three-day training workshop on the topic “Strategic Planning of Organization” on July 17-20, 2014 in Tbilisi, Georgia in the framework of the project “Assisting in development of sound civil society through strategic planning and implementation” funded by the Embassy of the Czech Republic.

Eighteen representatives of NGOs and civic initiatives from Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan participated in the training.

Ministry of Justice discussed with CSI issues of conditional early release system

On 10 July, a meeting was held at CSI, at which Souren Qrmoyan, Deputy Minister of Justice of RA, Norayr Balayan, MOJ Head of Department of legal provision, Arman Danielyan, President of CSI, representatives of CSI human rights department, and Hayk Khemchyan, Head of Program “Promotion of Probation Service in RA” of the Council of Europe.

Armenian delegation studied Georgian practice of probation and alternative punishment

On June 30-July 2, 2014 a delegation representing various governmental departments of the Republic of Armenia visited Georgia to study Georgia’s experience in introduction of probation system and practice of punishment unrelated to imprisonment.

Conference and Rock Concert Against Torture and Impunity

On 26 June, Civil Society Institute (CSI) and Foundation Against Violation of Law (FAVL) NGOs organized a number of events to commemorate the United Nations’ International Day of Support to Victims of Torture.

The organizations disseminated a joint announcement stating that the ineffective investigation and impunity have remained as a serious problem in cases of torture.
